Five Impact Players for Fantasy Football 2013

2042 Five Impact Players for Fantasy Football 20131. Percy Harvin to Seattle, Greg Jennings to Minnesota.

Pete Carroll1 Five Impact Players for Fantasy Football 2013

Carroll is downright giddy that Percy Harvin is #1 on this list.

Before free agency even officially began, the Seahawks pulled off the biggest move of the offseason, getting Harvin in a blockbuster trade from the Vikings. Harvin is arguably the best player in the league, and he can legitimately do everything. This move solidifies the Seahawks as Super Bowl favorites. With solid receivers already on the roster, Harvin’s fantasy value takes a slight hit in Seattle, though it’s still fair to consider him a WR1 option. Harvin’s presence certainly boosts Russell Wilson’s fantasy stock. He’s now locked in as a QB1 with elite upside.

Harvin leaving town left a huge hole at receiver that the Vikings hope they’ve filled withGreg Jennings. It’s certainly a downgrade for Jennings, as he goes from Aaron Rodgers to Christian Ponder throwing him the ball. While Jennings is now the seventh-highest paid wide receiver in the league, he doesn’t project as a top-ten fantasy option. Provided he can stay healthy, Jennings makes for a borderline WR2 in his new digs.

2. Steven Jackson to Atlanta

The Falcons significantly upgraded their run game, grabbing the best back available in this year’s free agency pool. While Jackson is no spring chicken and he has over 2,800 career touches, there’s surprisingly still plenty of tread left on his tires. In Atlanta’s high-powered offense, Jackson has an extremely high floor and should be considered a rock solid RB1 option.

While Jackson’s fantasy value is on the up and up, Jacquizz Rodgers is trending in the opposite direction. Rodgers flashed in the playoffs, and there was some talk from Mike Smith that he’d be used in a three-down role this season. Jackson’s signing eliminates any possibility of that playing out. We can’t rule out the possibility of Rodgers having some fantasy value, though Jackson’s abilities as a pass catcher will likely keep Rodgers in a limited role.

3. Wes Welker to Denver, Danny Amendola to New England

Welker goes from one Hall of Fame quarterback to another, joining Peyton Manning in the Mile High City. New England reportedly tried to keep him, offering $10 million over two years, but Welker opted for Denver’s slightly more lucrative $12 million fully guaranteed deal. Welker was a PPR beast in New England with triple-digit receptions in five of the last six seasons, but it’s a stretch to expect him to replicate this production with the Broncos.

Peyton now has plenty of mouths to feed, as both Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas saw over 100 targets last season. Thomas is a freak of nature, and he’s going to do his thing regardless. But Decker’s value certainly takes a hit. With Manning throwing them the ball, both Decker and Welker will still be solid fantasy options, though neither has elite upside.

With Welker heading west to Denver, the Patriots inked his replacement in Amendola, who flashed a very high fantasy ceiling last season in St. Louis. In the Welker role, Amendola’s value skyrockets. He’s a younger and perhaps more dynamic version of Welker. It’s fair to project Amendola for 100-plus receptions. The one problem with Amendola has always been injuries, as he hasn’t stayed healthy for an entire season since 2010. Still, it’s tough not to like him in New England. He’s a high-floor WR2 in standard leagues and a potential WR1 in PPR formats.

4. Reggie Bush to the Lions

With the likelihood of Jahvid Best returning extremely slim, Detroit signed Bush to serve in that role for their offense. This is perhaps the best place Bush could have landed, and his fantasy value remains fully intact. The Lions envision Bush as a three-down back, so he should get ample touches, including loads of receptions in Detroit’s pass-happy offense.

With Calvin Johnson on the field, Bush will have a lot more room to operate than he had in Miami. He makes for a strong RB2 option, and has added value in PPR leagues. The same can’t be said for Mikel Leshoure, whose fantasy value goes down the tubes with Bush now in town. Leshoure will no doubt be a touchdown vulture, but he’s unlikely to get more than a handful of touches per game.

5. Mike Wallace to the Dolphins

Mike Wallace WR Five Impact Players for Fantasy Football 2013

Wallace will look to bolster the NFL’s 7th worst passing attack from 2012.

Miami struck early in free agency, landing perhaps the best receiver in this year’s free agency class in WallaceRyan Tannehill now has a legitimate downfield threat, and he becomes a viable QB2 option. While Wallace certainly got paid off, this move doesn’t help his fantasy value. He’s extremely big-play dependent in terms of fantasy production, and Tannehill hasn’t displayed the kind of deep ball we’ve seen from Ben Roethlisberger.

Wallace’s low-floor, high-ceiling combination makes it tough to trust him as anything more than an inconsistent WR2. This move does help Brian Hartline, who is much better suited to a No. 2 role. Hartline has value in deeper PPR leagues. The Dolphins also signed WRBrandon Gibson, though it’s tough to envision Gibson having fantasy value in the foreseeable future.

Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning

Manning_cropped

Tom Brady is a better quarterback than Peyton Manning.

What has been a fait accompli in the Curtis household since Peyton completed a touchdown pass with the Saints’ Tracy Porter in Super Bowl XLVI is now a fact.

Peyton has been a regular-season MVP four times and will likely get his fifth in the coming weeks. Tom Brady has two such awards. In those seven seasons, neither won the ultimate prize of a Lombardi trophy. But in lieu of going back over their entire bodies of regular-season work, I will say this: Peyton Manning will go down in history as the greatest non-playoff quarterback of all time. However, that is not what this debate is about.

The purpose of having a good regular season, its only significance, is to position yourself best for postseason success. (Think Matt Cassell tanking the Pats’ final regular-season game by throwing a pass to the McDonalds stand at the end of the ’05 season at Gillette so the Pats would get the Jaguars in the wild card round).

We do not hand out Green Jackets for the lowest career net under par after three rounds at Augusta National. Nobody cares. It is what you do on the final Sunday that matters ingolflb icon1 Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning because that is the day when they hand out the trophy.

The same goes for the National Football League. Eli Manning has a career passer rating of 82.7, nearly 14 points beneath his big brother’s of 96. But we will always remember how he took less innate talent and a lesser supporting cast to two improbable Super Bowl runs. Eli lost to the RG3-less Redskins twice last year, but that is a mere footnote in what would become his second Super Bowl season.

In the (expected) five regular seasons in which Peyton Manning was the NFL’s most valuable player, he went 5-5 in the games that mattered, the playoffs. Consider that. He was the NFL’s best player at the most important position in major professional sportslb icon1 Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning and went .500 in 10 postseason games.

Saturday night in Denver, Peyton Manning had his eighth one-and-done in 11 playoff appearances, double the amount of the next highest quarterback in the Super Bowl era. Eight times Peyton Manning entered the postseason for his playoff opener and left the stadium with golf clubs and a tee time (don’t forget he also took a picture with Ray Lewis). Tom Brady has been to the playoffs 11 times as well and has been one-and-done twice, or four times fewer than Saint Peyton.

With Sunday’s win against the Texans, Tom Brady surpassed Joe Montana to become the all-time winningest playoff QB in NFL history with 17 victories. In Brady’s 11 healthy seasons, all but four have included an appearance in the AFC Championship Game. Tom will now have played in two fewer AFC Championship games (7) than Peyton Manning has career playoff wins (9).

In Brady’s 23 playoff games he has a plus-21 touchdown-to-interception ratio, more than double Peyton’s plus-9 TD-to-INT count.

These two men will forever be linked in their Hall of Fame careers, but there should no longer be any doubt as to who is the greatest quarterback of this generation. It is the man who is at his best when the games meant the most. It is Tom Brady.

Fantasy Football Advice: Relax!

01

May I offer one simple word of advice?  Relax!

Stop panicking about your team before it has even taken the field.  You presumably spent a reasonable (if not unreasonable) amount of time preparing for your draft, and you made the best choices you could under the circumstances.  Now give your guys a chance to compete.

There will be plenty of opportunities to tweak your roster, if necessary, after the season begins, either through trade or free agency.  Making an impulsive move now – driven by irrational concern or sheer boredom – is more likely to backfire than propel you to fantasy glory.

Heck, the NFL even cut 24 hours off our wait this year.  So take a deep breath, get your lineup set and spend a little extra time with the family.  Before you know it, Romo and Eli will be slinging the pigskin around and everything will be right in the world again.

Okay, I’ll toss you one bone.  If Jonathan Dwyer is available in your league and you have an extra kicker, defense or other expendable player at the bottom of your roster, grab him.  The Steelers tailback has had an impressive preseason, and could even draw the Week 1 start against the Broncos, thanks to a slew of nagging injuries to Isaac Redman.

If the fast-rising Dwyer out-performs Redman in the opener, he could potentially seize the starting job going forward.  You’re better off grabbing him now, rather than taking your chances on the waiver wire next week.

Another hot Twitter topic centers on the status of Maurice Jones-Drew, who finally ended his acrimonious 38-day holdout and reported to the Jaguars on Sunday.  Will he play?  Will he start?  More specifically, should he be in your starting lineup, or resting safely on your bench in Week 1?

Unfortunately, your guess is probably as good as mine, since Jags head coach Mike Mularkey hasn’t returned my calls, emails, texts, Tweets, pokes or smoke signals.

No doubt, starting MJD in Week 1 poses a significant degree of risk.  The decision, therefore, comes down to your alternatives.  Do you have another running back with clearer prospects for success?  If you play with a flex position, do you have a safer option at WR or TE?

I expect Jones-Drew will see some action on Sunday in Minnesota; but Rashad Jennings will draw the start and the bulk of the carries.  If you have a choice between those two, Jennings is your man.

Earlier last week, Kenny Britt and his fantasy owners got the best news they could possibly have hoped for, when the NFL imposed a hand-slap suspension of just one week for the receiver’s eighth – eighth!!! – arrest since turning pro in 2009.  As a result, Britt catapulted up draft boards and gave those who gambled a late-round pick on him just days earlier a serendipitous boost to their 2012 prospects.

Britt, whose injured knee is expected to be fully healed by Week 2, has the potential to produce at an elite fantasy level.  An opening-game “bye” is a small price to pay for a fantasy wideout with that much potential.  Don’t ever get in a car he’s driving; but don’t hesitate to grab him if your draft is still ahead.

Those counting on big things from Hakeem Nicks should brace themselves for some pre-game jitters throughout the season.  The explosive wideout has admitted that his surgically repaired foot is not yet fully healed, and that he expects to play with pain all year.  That’s not what you want to hear in the preseason from one of your most important players.

You know by now that Jason Witten’s prospects for playing in Wednesday’s opener are slim to none.  Like Britt, you’ll need to squirrel him away for a week; but probably no longer.  Once his lacerated spleen is fully healed, Witten should immediately return to elite form.

In even better news for Romo, both Dez Bryant (knee) and Miles Austin (hamstring) are fully expected to suit up for the Giants contest.

But to me, the most eagerly anticipated question of the 2012 season won’t be answered until Sunday night in Denver.  Will the historically durable, gun-slinging Peyton Manning be back, or will the post-neck injury version prove to be a fragile shell of the four-time league MVP?

The answer has huge implications not only for Manning’s owners and Broncos fans, but for those betting big on Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Jacob Tamme.

Oh yes, I am ready for some (fantasy) football.

NFL Quarterback Rankings

fantasy player rankings1 NFL Quarterback Rankings

Over the last few years, the fantasy football players have seen a spell of weakening in the value of running backs.  Once considered the top priority bar-none for any scoring type.  Now with two set backs and teams relying on a platoon of runners and fewer teams relying on single backs, the top of the draft has become a landing spot for quarterbacks.

Quarterbacks are becoming harder to slot in your fantasy draft and more often than not, teams are reaching for a QB who normally would have been drafted much lower.  In the first round, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees hold spots anywhere from the fifth spot down.  The value after that has dropped considerably and some would argue that even those three being drafted mid-round first is too high.  Especially in standard scoring leagues where the QB receives 4 points for every touchdown.

It’s beyond those three that has me wondering where indeed the QB’s have gone.

Michael Vick was a consensus first round pick last year but a poor season and skepticism has him ranked as far as the 3rd round making him a high risk player in the 2nd.  Phillip Rivers lost his starting WR’s and TEAntonio Gates is starting to slide with his production and health.  Suddenly the poor season the historically  consistent Rivers last year, seems more likely to repeat than reverse.

The only QB who statistically is making a move up the ranks is Matt Stafford who many drafted in the middle rounds.  Now suddenly, Stafford is poised to become the fourth QB off the board.  In Carolina, Cam Newtonshowed a ton of potential but Newton could become this years Michael Vick.  Over-drafted with little return.  Is Cam Newton a second round fantasy draft selection?  Is he a top end 3?

The issue here is simple.  Most leagues are 12 teams leagues.  Some will be ten.  With three QB’s standing out and above all the others and fourth making a legit climb, six to eight teams will have to grab a QB early or risk having mediocre talent holding their top roster spot on Sundays head to head or point match-ups.

With Rivers, Vick, and Newton likely to garner considerations in rounds 2 and 3 which potentially could be serious reaches if/when point production rate out to the values as a 2nd or 3rd round pick.  Behind those two, the drop off is considerable.

While Peyton Manning is lining up behind center this year, concerns about the Denver offense and his health is a concern that is keeping his stock from flying up into the to rounds…and rightfully so.  Last years Super Bowl winning QB Eli Manning is still so up and down inconsistent that even his WR’s are not first look WR’s.  Truth is that despite Eli’s Super Bowl showing, his first six games last year cost teams victories and his production fantasy wise became a weekly question mark for teams wondering if they should start him.

Eli and Peyton Manning however may be the best of what is left of a weakening QB crop.  The inconsistent Tony Romo, Alex Smith, Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Schaub coming back from a season ending injury, Buffalo’s short leashed Ryan Fitzpatrick, or last years rookie sensation Andy Dalton suddenly have become the top if not only options for teams not drafting in a QB friendly slot.  Do you reach on a QB early or do you take a risk late on a rookie like Andrew Luck or RGIII?

Traditionally, teams want to lock up two starting QB’s.  One to cover the bye week and two to cover injury.  Looking at the lineup of QB’s and the questionable value of their draft slotting, teams may wait longer to take their second starter or may even have to wait to take their primary.  No longer is there a list of bona-fide producing QB’s on the draft charts.

The good news is that could easily change in only a few years.  A large influx of talent in the last two seasons has seen the NFL QB pool begin to fill with prospective talent.  Guys like Jake Locker and Christian Ponder to go along with Andy Dalton.  Matt Flynn in Seattle could become a valuable QB in the future.  Luck and RGIII are supposed to be future franchise QB’s as is Ryan Tannehill in Miami and Brandon Weedon in Cleveland.

For now it’s a roll of the roulette wheel.  Do you draft early and reach for a QB who is coming off a down season with questionable possibility of reversing this season or do you stick to your guns and wait taking players who may provide a better stability for your roster overall but leave you dry when placing a name next to the QB slot at the top of your active roster?

That is the beauty of fantasy football.  You simply just don’t know what is going to happen.

Don’t Be Foolish: Pick Eli over Peyton

indexdon

lg peyton eli deion1 Dont Be Foolish: Pick Eli over Peyton
Peyton Manning (Photo credits: DirecTV)

In fantasy football, Peyton Manning has always been the superior quarterback compared to his younger brother, Eli. But after coming off a season where he has thrown for 29 touchdowns and a career high 4,933 yards, Eli is making his case as the Manning to target in fantasy this year. In 2010, Peyton's numbers were nearly identical as he threw for 4,700 yards and 33 touchdowns. Both Mannings are elite quarterbacks, but let's take a look at some of their pros and cons.

Beginning with Peyton, his move to the Denver Broncos does not drastically hurt or help him. He does lose the comfort of playing indoors where he does not have to worry about the wind or cold weather, but looking at his numbers, there's not much of a difference in his performance when he plays outdoors. By leaving Indianapolis, he also loses his trusted receivers in Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie and Dallas Clark. However, Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas have proven to be a formidable tandem even in a run-oriented offense led by Tim Tebow. Former Colts tight end Jacob Tamme is also joining Peyton in the Mile High City and has shown that he can be a trusted security blanket.

Statistically, Peyton has thrown for over 4,000 yards in 11 of his 13 years and in four of his last five years has thrown for at least 30 touchdowns. No matter where he plays, he's virtually a lock to duplicate those numbers. Over the past decade, Peyton has been one of the best and most consistent quarterbacks in fantasy.

The biggest question with Peyton is his age and health. With the exception of last season, Peyton has never missed a game in his career, but having undergone multiple neck surgeries raises some concern if he can play a full season. It may even take a few games before we see the Peyton of old. He'll need time to get back into game shape while adjusting to a new offense with different receivers and running backs.

On the other hand, Eli does not face the challenges that Peyton must overcome. Even though the New York Giants lost Mario Manningham and Brandon Jacobs in the offseason, rookies Rueben Randle and David Wilson should be able to maintain their level of production. The addition of tight end Martellus Bennett will give Eli another big target to throw to if he can get consistent playing time. Still, having receivers Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz as his primary receiving options catapult Eli into a top-10 fantasy quarterback.

Since Tom Coughlin took over as head coach eight years ago, his team has always relied on the run. Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw were the centerpieces of the offense, but the focus has shifted to Eli and the wide outs. Over the past four seasons Eli's pass attempts have continued to increase, which indicates he is assuming more responsibility on offense, while at the same time, the run game has gradually taken a step back (ranked last in rushing yards per game in 2011). The combination of a strong passing attack and struggling ground game gives Eli a strong opportunity to produce week in and week out.

The only concerns surrounding Eli is a possible letdown season and having to play eight games against a top-12 pass defense. The Giants' arch-rival Dallas Cowboys also made upgrades in their secondary through the draft and free agency. It will be a tall order for Eli to duplicate last year's numbers, but given his improved play, he has shown that he can make big plays under tough circumstances.

If both quarterbacks put up similar numbers, why not go with Eli who has fewer question marks with his health and team? As great as Peyton is, this could be the first time Eli trumps his older brother in fantasy football.

Tim Tebow Jets (NY JETS) New York Jets Tebowmania

Tebowmania is on this season… Tim Tebow led the Broncos to the playoffs last season along the way beating Sanchez and the Jets, who missed the postseason. But Denver executive John Elway believed Manning gave the team a better chance at winning a championship now. Just another crazy day for the New York Jets. Hours after the Jets announced they had agreed in principle to acquire Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos, ESPN reported that the deal hit a snag. Citing anonymous sources, ESPN says Wednesday that provisions in the quarterback’s contract are causing complications in the completion of the trade. ESPN says Tebow’s contract has million worth of recapture language, which means the Jets would have to pay back some money to the Broncos. The hang-up came hours after the Jets declared they were bringing the polarizing quarterback to New York as a complement to starter Mark Sanchez. Denver general manager Brian Xanders said the Broncos would receive fourth- and sixth-round draft picks, while New York would get a seventh-rounder all in 2012. It’s just another bizarre moment for the Jets, a team that has had its share of them over the years, conjuring memories of Bill Belichick’s hiring as coach and his resignation one day later. The Jets would have lots of explaining to do no matter whether the deal goes through or falls apart. As part of Tebow’s .25 million, five-year contract he signed as a rookie in 2010, he had a .277 million advance due 29 days after the start
